Cooler Days
Summer's winding down, and these nights have us
thinking of cooler times. Fall, apart from being the season of Apple Cider,
Chrysanthemums, and Pumpkins, is also the best time of year for planting
Perennial gardens. The long winter allows perennials to develop their roots
and be ready for Spring. Can you believe we're thinking of Spring already?
It will be here in a wink...and so will the
blooms on all the biennials you planted this year: foxgloves, mulleins,
hollyhocks, malvas.
You can follow Karen's gardening journal here,
at the gardenblog. You can always find great ideas to help you get your
hands dirty there. We also have the first definitive inventory of our
perennials, grasses, and herbs up in our plant list section
here.
You'll also find a new recipe for the perfect
summer salsa on the Great Ideas page here.
Finally, this Fall, we invite you to join us at our
outdoor shop next to Food For Thought on Rt 522. We'll have some gorgeous
Chrysanthemums, Pumpkins, Apples, and, of course, perennials. Enjoy the site
and the season, and thanks for stopping by!

Summer Plant Sale
With summer at full tilt here in Virginia, we've
been watering as fast as the cool stuff comes out of the spigot. We have
more plants here on the farm than ever, and that means so much more to water
every day. Still, the weather has been fine and it's hard to complain with
so much to enjoy from the gardens. With herb gardens and vegetable patches
finally taking off in the summer heat, there's no excuse not to use fresh
foods in your meals every day.
We have some new gardening advice this week on the
Gardenblog here, as well as some advice on pressing flowers and sending
them in the ever-more-infrequent hand-written letters in
Great Ideas.
Don't
forget that next week is our annual 50% off Perennial Sale. It's a great
opportunity to come out and find some new hidden gems to put in the garden.
What better time to experiment, try some mass plantings, or finally put in
that perennial border. As always, let us know if you have any questions. You
can give us a call at 540.547.3726 or email us at morningsidefarmandnursery@gmail.com.
Thanks for reading, and we look forward to seeing you out at the farm!

PLANT SWAP INFO

This Sunday, June 24th, is our First Annual
Plant Swap. We're very excited about the start of a great tradition. Plant
swaps are a fun way to dig and share plants from your own garden while
picking up something new and exciting that you can bring home. Some of the
most unusual plants in our garden have come from trading with other
gardeners. The Swap begins at 2 p.m.
As usual, we'll have something tasty and herby
for you to enjoy while you're swapping and browsing. And, as an added bonus,
all Plant Swappers will get 15% off their plant purchases at Morningside on
the day of the Swap.
Rules of the Swap:
-
The Swap begins at 2 p.m.
-
Dig something from your garden. You can
transport it in an old pot, in a plastic garbage bag, or just bare-root.
Just remember to be careful if you put it on the seat of your car...
-
When you arrive, we'll give you ticket that
allows you to pick out a number of plants equal to the number of plants
you've brought.
-
Browse through the swappable plants (some
will be from our garden, some will be from yours)
We can't wait to see you for the First Annual
Plant Swap. If you have any further questions, you can email us at
morningsidefarmandnursery@gmail.com or call us at 540.547.3726.
5.15.07 Container
Gardens and Veggies
It's been a great Spring so far! We'd like to thank everyone who has come
out to join us as we make our big changes. Don't forget that the Grand
Opening of our new Greenhouses and retail area is next weekend, May 26th and
27th. We'll have some great specials and something to nibble on along with
all sorts of new things to see.
We'd also like to thank everyone who came out to join us for our Container
Garden and Herb/Veggie Garden Workshops last week. You can see pictures of
both on the left. You can also catch us this Saturday at the plant sale at
Greenspring Gardens and at our regular Saturday morning Farmer's Market in
Burke, VA.
Don't forget to check out the new gardenblog
and enjoy the rain while it's falling! 5.1.07
Good Press
and more Garden Workshops
We were very happy to appear in the new Culpeper
Star-Exponent Spring section last week. Your friendly neighborhood reporter
Katie Dolac really knocked one out of the park for us. We hope everyone else
enjoyed the article and pictures as much as we did. The coverpage of Spring
section is at the left, and you can see our scans of the article below. Between plant shows, our wonderful customers at
the farm, and getting the garden planted, it's been a busy few weeks at
Morningside. Luckily, we've still had time to admire the blooming tree
peonies, which you can see pictured at the left.
Don't forget that this Saturday and Sunday, May
5th and 6th, are our two latest Gardening Workshops. May 5th brings our
Container Workshop at 2 p.m., and May 6th is our K.I.S.S. Workshop for small
edible gardens, also at 2 p.m. More information on the events page
here. We' d love to see everyone out for the workshops. If you'd like to
come to either workshop, please R.S.V.P. to
morningsidefarmandnursery@gmail.com or call 1.540.547.3726.

 4.15.07 Tufa
Workshop Success, New Gardenblog, etc.
We've
had lots of excitement since the last web update. First, our opening day
was...covered in two inches of snow. Note the picture of our just-bloomed
crab apple tree covered in the white stuff. The snow was beautiful, but it
kept away all but the few daring enough to venture out. We're happy to
report, however, that we've had lots of people stop by to see what's
blooming since! We also held our first workshop
of the season on Saturday April 14th. The two bottom pictures on the left
show our attendees making their hypertufas. Hypertufas are cement, peat
moss, and sand pots that are easy to make and fun to plant for years to
come. Learn how to make a beautiful container garden in your tufa (or any
other pot) at our Container Gardening Workshop on May 5th.
Finally,
our first plant show of the season at Green Spring Gardens was a great
success, and we hope that its a harbinger of things to come at our later
shows in the D.C., Richmond areas and the Virginia State Arboretum. Check
our events page for a list of all the plant shows
we'll be attending. You can also find a new
gardenblog filled with lots of great garden
info and a new great ideas from customer
request: the world's greatest Mint Julep.
Thanks for visiting us online! Stop by the farm seven days a week from
10-6pm! 4.1.07 Tufa
Workshop, Gardenblog, etc.
It must be
spring because we've been hearing the neighborhood lawnmowers running for
the first time this weekend. We've missed the smell of cut grass. Further
signs: the hellebores, like the one pictured to the right, are in full
bloom. Daffodils, peach and pear trees, and forsythia, too. Is it just us,
or does this happen earlier every year?
Construction on our new retail space is now complete. Now, the fun part:
planting our thousands of square feet of new gardens and watching our new
grass grow. We also have the long task of getting our new space ready for
public consumption. We have a long way to go, but the potential is just
astounding.
You may have seen our advertisements in the
Culpeper TImes or Rappahannock News regarding our Hypertufa class on
Saturday, April 14th at 2:00pm. We'll show you how to make your own
hypertufa pot...then you'll make one! After your pot cures, come back for a
class on how to fill your tufa with beautiful plants. The price for the tufa,
the plants, and English-style tea, herb scones, and shortbread is $35. You
won't want to miss it! If you're interested in the Hypertufa class, please
email us at
www.morningsidefarmandnursery@gmail.com or call 540.547.3726.
Also, check out the latest
gardenblog to find out what else is happening
here at the farm! 3.24.07 Spring Falls Like Rain
All of a sudden, Winter looks to be over. Today, the temperature reached an
improbable eighty degrees on the farm. While admiring the fine weather, we
received a delivery of truly gorgeous ironwork, some of which you can see
pictured on the left. This year our collection of rustic ironwork will be
better than ever. If it looks this good right off the truck, imagine how
well it will highlight the garden! This latest bunch includes garden
ornaments, birdhouses (with pot holders!), seats and benches, and quirky
sculpture.
One of our new greenhouses is now fully complete
and the second won't be far behind. Our new retail area seems to be coming
together just in time for our opening day on Saturday, April 7th. You can
read all about the process on the Gardenblog here.
Now that the peeper frogs are singing their songs and we can comfortably
watch the sun set behind the Blue Ridge again, we know that the Spring rush
is nearly upon us.
You can also check out our new Great Ideas section, where you'll find a exposé on cut
pussy willow arrangements...a really great idea. 3.16.07
New Great Ideas! Posted: Willows and Cut Willow
Arrangements
Follow
this link or click "Great Ideas" on the
Menu bar to the left to read about one of our favorite plants...the
willow. Hundreds of varieties are great for either beautiful foliage
or their unusual fuzzy catkins. Your house won't look complete
without a cut pussy willow vase arrangement. Enjoy.
